Instructions to Authors

for

Submission to  the PSIF Topical Issue of Physica Scripta

1. Submission.

Manuscripts should be sent as e-mail attachments to the email address of the Workshop publishing secretary, Fay Ownby, ownbyfm@ornl.gov , by May 1, 2005. It is not possible to submit a paper version only. There is no limit to size of file submission but authors should submit large graphic files in a compressed format. However, the length of the papers is limited to 4 publishers pages (see “Length of Articles” below for more details).

File formats acceptable include Word and  LaTex. See 10 below.

Papers should be written in English.

2. Title page.

The first page should bear (a) the title of the paper; (b) the initial(s) and the name(s) of the author(s); (c) the name and the complete address of the laboratory where the work has been carried out; (d) footnote with the author's electronic mail address, (e) footnote with permanent address(es) of author(s) where they differ from the laboratory address and (f) classification number(s), according to the Physics and Astronomy Classification Scheme Definitions (PACs), which the author considers most appropriate for the paper.

3. Abstract.

Each paper should be preceded by an abstract.

4. Headings.

Principal headings should be numbered consecutively 1, 2, 3, . . . , etc. Subheadings should be numbered 1.1, 1.2, . . . , etc.

5. References.

References (including comments) must be numbered consecutively, in order of first appearance in the text. The reference number should be put within square brackets [2] on the text line. Journal references should contain: (a) the names of all authors with their initials, if the number of authors does not exceed 5. If the number of authors is larger than 5, only the first author followed by "et al." should be stated; (b) the title of the periodical shortened according to "Physics Abstracts List of Journals"; (c) volume number in bold face; (d) starting page number of the cited paper and (e) year of publication in parenthesis.

Thus:

1. Stenflo, L., Weiland, J. and Wilhelmsson, H., Physica Scripta 1, 46 (1970).

2. Kalvius, G. M. et al., Europhys. Lett. 29, 501 (1995).

Book references should be written as in the examples below.

1. White, R. W. and Geballe, T. H., "Long Range Order in Solids" (Academic Press, New York 1979), p. 317.

2. Frauenfelder, H. and Steffen, R. M., "Angular Correlations in Alpha-, Beta- and Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy". (Edited by K. Siegbahn) (North-Holland Publ. Co., Amsterdam 1965), vol. II, ch. XIX (A), p. 997.

6. Footnotes.

Footnotes should be avoided in text.

7. Mathematical material.

Formulae should be numbered consecutively with the number in parentheses to the right of the formula. Variables and parameters should be typed in italic. Vectors should be typed in bold italic. Tensors should be typed in bold roman (upright). Spectroscopic symbols such as 4s4d 3D should be in roman type.

The use of the International System of units (Sl) is recommended.

8. Figures.

Figures should be submitted as separate files (i.e., they should not be embedded in the text) in postscript format along with the native application file. In addition, authors may also embed the figures in the text, to help guest authors in reviewing and editing process (see the note at the end of the text).  Authors are reminded that the use of grey scales may inhibit satisfactory reproduction unless a minimum of such scales are used and subtle tint variations are avoided.  Figures submitted in colour will only be published electronically in that format. Additional costs apply for figures printed in colour in the print version of the conference. Authors can expect to be contacted about poor illustrations submitted for publication and are thus advised to maintain access to their figures for a reasonable period after submission.

Number all illustrations consecutively throughout the paper. Each must be referred to in the main text in consecutive numerical order. Figure captions should be listed separately at the end of the text.

9. Tables.

Tables should be separated from the main text and numbered consecutively with capital Roman numerals in order of appearance in the text. Extensive tables will appear  On-line only, with a direct URL reference in the printed issue.

10. Length of articles.

Physica Scripta page format allows for up to 7500 characters per page equivalent to about 1200 words.

Six characters (example, letters Paris and a space) constitute one word. Due allowance should be made for formulae.  Illustrations should be scaled so as to fit in a single column  (of 8.5cm) and, normally, to occupy up to 25% of a page. Larger figures should be scaled so as to be compatible with smaller figures. Notation in figures should not be in colour or in grey scale as this inhibits reproduction. Sample manuscript files in both Word and TeX are given to assist in estimating article length (together with relevant final-publisher’s printable pdf versions).

Note: Although not required, authors are invited to submit their electronic manuscript (MsWord or LaTex) in forms close to camera-ready (similarly to the pdf  sample files) .
