ABSTRACT
The ORNL ion-atom merged-beams apparatus has measured benchmark electron capture cross sections for the multicharged ion N5+ on D from 1.5 eV/u to 570 eV/u (M. S. Huq, C. C. Havener, and R. A. Phaneuf, Physical Review A, 40 1811 (1989)). The measurements reproduce the general trend of the predicted cross section, a rising cross section as the collision energy decreases. Unfortunately, measurements could not be extended to lower energies where trajectory effects become important and can lead to sharp increases in the cross section.
