ORNL ECR SOUCE
CHRONOLOGY:
- Oringinal ORNL ECR Source in operation since 1984; fabricated with AT funds; was first ECR source worldwide to be exclusively dedicated to study of atomic collisions of multicharged ions
- BES funded source upgrade approved in FY 1991.
RECENT PROGRESS:
- Mini-oven for metallic species installed and tested Dec. 1993
- can now produce multicharged ion beams of virtually any element of Periodic Table
- 1 Tesla hexapole installed Nov., 1995
- provides better electron confinement than original 8.5 kG hexople
FUTURE PLANS:
- Place original ECR source in 200 kV High Voltage Platform to be located in MIRF (AIRM proposal sumitted to BES FY 1993)
- will permit investigations of new collision mechanisms in little studied velocity regime for multicharged ions
- will increase capabilities of present experiment (e.g. higher CM energies will mean higher electron energies above threshold measurable im MEIBEL experiment)
- will prove capability for performing two-source ion-ion collision experiment
